You can not do New York justice in words. For anyone curious about this city I recommend to just go there. Anna and I have come away a little smitten with the Big Apple. There is a feeling of being simultaneously imporant and anonymous, like you are involved a movement towards something important, you just don't know what that is and what your role in this is.
For me memories of New York are framed by three distinct features; 1) Central Park, 2) Shopping with Anna for boots, 3) The `what movie is that scene from` syndrome?
1) Central Park is massive. What more can I say? Strawberry fields was a highlight, being a beatles fan it was warming to experience, while rooted in capalilst intention, New Yorkers appreciation for what John Lennon stood for. Sheep meadows was another area that resonated with us, we did not see any sheep though.
Anna is funny, her favourite thing about central park is its symmetry.
2) We spent about 50 man hours trauling all of New Yorks downtown, midtown and uptown for the pefect pair of boots for Anna. Not too blingy, no big buckles, no identity crises, not too shiny...but classically styled black boots. Sounds easy, not quite. You'll be happy to know we found the perfect pair, not as happy as I was but a happy ending none the less. Honestly though, it was almost fun. If you want your man to shop enthusiastcally with you just give him an objective, I.E classic black boots. We need a target to work towards.
3) Icons like times Square (Men in Black) and the Central Park Zoo (Madagascar) are constant sources of de ja vu as you recognise them from Television or a film.
I think the USA is summed up perfectly in the words of John Jacob Raskob, the visionary behind the Empire State Building, when he asked "How high can we make it, so it won't fall down?'
God bless America and please vote for Obama in 2008!!!
